Pulse, 2017

three channel digital video projection, sound, tin foil, tinsel curtain

When making this work, I set out to document a friend’s first time performance in drag. It was an amateur drag night, hosted by a seasoned queen at a now closed DIY music venue. The performers on stage were electrifying as most drag performances are but, because this was their first performance ever, I was compelled to record it. I decided to pair the video with shots of power lines and audio of radio wave static to amplify that electric feeling. When editing the video I kept thinking of the tragedy the year prior at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, FL. The shooting was devastating. A safe space for queers to gather, especially Latinx queers, was horrifically violated and dismantled by the hate crime. Having found a safe place like that of my own in Athens, GA, I realize what the piece had become for me.
